4 Amazing Apps for Nighttime Photography

Stars Over FarmI have had a recent fascination with photographing the night sky. It all started with a trip to a cabin in the woods in northern Michigan this summer. After quickly becoming bored photographing green ferns and woodland scenery, I planned a night shoot of the Milky Way. I became hooked!

After that, my poor husband was at the mercy of the weather and the timing of the Milky Way with late night drives out into the countryside to get away from the light pollution of the city. (yes, I am still scared of the dark!) It gives me a sense of security to have a tagalong or fellow photographer, especially out on the back country roads in the middle of the night.

It did not take long to figure out which apps would help me with this venture and take a lot of the guess work out of the positioning and best time to catch the brightest part of the Milky Way. You can lose a lot of sleep and miles driving if you do not plan ahead.

Sky Guide App

App #1: Sky Guide

This App is amazing in that you can pre-plan a photo trip into the future by using the Time & Date setting. If I want to look ahead to next weekend, all I have to do is put in the date and approximate time I want to go out to see the Milky Way. It will let me know where the Milky Way is by direction and position above or below the horizon. You can point your device in any direction and it will show you the position of the Moon, Sun and all of the stars. You can even select a star or planet and it will give you a detailed description. You can go years into the future with this app.

Cost: $1.99 – by Fifth Star Labs

Storm App

App #2: Storm

This is my favorite weather app. It’s very important to know the predicted weather and cloud cover for your upcoming photography adventure. There is nothing worse than driving 2 hours to your special location and not being able to see the stars. Although there is always a chance of haze, even the lightest cloud cover can ruin a great shot. It always helps to study the weather beforehand.

Cost: Free – by Weather Underground LLC

Dark Sky Park

App #3: Compass

This app has turned out to be really important for me to verify which direction I am facing. Even though Sky Guide has a built in compass/tracking feature. I find that my iphone can sometimes be about 15 degrees off with this app, especially inside my vehicle. I like to verify my direction with the compass app. It can be hard to see the Milky Way with the naked eye, especially in low light polluted areas. The compass app will help you set your first shot up in the general direction.

Cost: Free

App #4: Photo Pills

This app is especially helpful when you are new to night photography. You can use the Exposure Values chart to get basic guideline for setting up your camera. It will have some nighttime settings for photographing the moon, with recommended aperture, shutter speed and ISO. It even includes a Milky Way planner. I have not used this app to its full potential, but I have used the exposure chart.

Cost $9.99 – by Photo Pills

I am sure that there are multiple apps out there that work just as well and would love to hear our feedback on what works best for you!

Scottdale Invasion! Press Trip in Arizona.

Scottdale Invasion! Press Trip in Arizona.

Saguro Lobby

By now, some of you may be wondering why there is a flood of Arizona photos hitting all of the Porteen Gear social media. Don’t worry! Team Porteen is still in the studio in Michigan making all of the orders! I was invited to take part in the Scottsdale, Arizona bloggers trip called the Scottdale Invasion. It is a great way to showcase an area that would be a great travel destination and also a great opportunity to field test Porteen gear.

Saguaro-Lobby

You will be seeing the trip as it unfolds for the next 4 days and then I will be back in the studio. You can also see more detailed reviews of the resorts and restaurants on my Global Snapshots blog at WanderlustandLipstick.com

For this trip, I have taken a Compact Camera bag and turned it into a blogger bag with Ipad Mini, Iphone and a Fuji XT1 camera. Turns out it is the perfect size! I even fit a wallet, sunglasses and a light jacket on top. I will be reviewing the Fuji XT1 and the different used of the compact camera bag.

Page One Automotive even gave me a brand new Toyota Camry to drive so I can showcase that on my desert adventures!

Stay tuned….. Robyn Porteen

Between the Seams – The People that Make Porteen Gear Possible – Danielle

Porteen Gear PeopleWe thought it would be a good idea to show you all of the people that have a hand in making all of the Porteen Gear products and are a key part of helping the business run smoothly. We will be showcasing the small family owned businesses and individuals who are part of the daily happenings at Porteen Gear. It was asked of each person to hold something that is their passion for a portrait to be taken after their interview.

Our first Between the Seams will showcase Danielle.

Danielle came aboard this past April to help with all of the miscellaneous tasks in the Porteen Gear studio. She cuts most of the pattern pieces for the camera bags, gathers all of the hardware and other parts for the weekly batches of bags to be sewn, makes all of the camera straps, and lovingly wraps and ships the orders. She is a joy to work with and brings a fun and happy personality into the studio.

The sad part of this story is that Danielle will be leaving us soon. I hired her for the summer knowing that she was married to a Marine and will be departing with her husband, Koen to Japan in August. Koen is a Marine and has been stationed in Japan since December. She was in need of a job that occupied her summer and I needed some time to think about who I would hire full time before the holiday rush in late fall. It worked out well for both of us and I will miss her dearly!

Interview with Danielle

Q. What is your passion?

A. I have always been passionate about Halloween, ever since I was a kid I loved Halloween. I love Tim Burton and I’m fascinated with special effects.

 Q. What was your favorite part of working for Porteen Gear?

A. Honestly? My boss and the atmosphere at the studio. Porteen Gear is founded and run by great people who work hard and care about putting out a great quality product.

Q. If you could jump on a plane in the next 10 minutes,  where would you go?

A. Nowhere! I am already dreading the long plane ride to Japan in a week.

Q. What was your worst job ever?

A. Without mentioning the company name, I worked at a home improvement store and had to listen to an auto-play of the company jingle all day and was forced to up-sell from a list at the check-out.

Q. What is the most exciting thing coming up in your life in the near future?

A. Most looking forward to moving to Japan, experiencing the Japanese culture and being able to travel.

Q. What is the least exciting thing coming up in your life in the near future?

A. Being away from family and the plane ride to the other side of the world.

We wish Danielle and Koen a safe and happy trip to Japan! It will be exciting to keep in touch with Danielle and hear how she is doing!

Porteen Gear Danielle

Danielle and Koen reunited in Grand Rapids after 8 months apart. He came home to Grand Rapids to bring his bride back to Japan to their home near base.

Update: Danielle agreed to model the latest size of convertible handbag in tribal fashion before she left. Here are a couple of previews.

Frida Kahlo: Our Inspirational Artist of the Month

Frida Kahlo

I’ll paint myself because I am so often alone, because I am the subject I know best.“-Frida Kahlo

Painter. Born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderon on July 6, 1907, in Coyocan, Mexico City, Mexico. Frida Kahlo is best known for her surreal self-portraits that feature bold, vibrant colors and visual expressions.

Self-Portrait-with-Necklace-of-ThornsShe suffered many physical ailments throughout her life. At the age of 6, Kahlo contracted polio that caused one leg to be thinner than the other and was in a traffic accident that left her in a full body cast at the age of 18. Frida was hospitalized for a few months to recover from injuries to her pelvis, shoulder, collar bone, and foot injuries. She had over 35 operations and was unable to have children due to medical complications. To cope with the pain, Kahlo turned to painting as her outlet.

Frida was greatly influenced by the indigenous Mexican culture, her physical pains she endured and her husband, Mexican painter Diego Rivera, whom she married at the age of 22. By the late 1930s, Kahlo had her first and only solo gallery, was featured in an exhibition in Paris, and sold a painting, The Frame, to the Louvre. p0255

Frida died on July 26, 1954 at the age of 47 in her beloved Blue House in Mexico City. The official cause of death was pulmonary embolism but there was speculation that she may have committed suicide by overdose. An autopsy was never conducted.

We love Frida Kahlo because she was a visionary. She had the incredible talent of being able to capture her pain and express it so vividly. Frida was a strong and passionate woman, traits we admire and are greatly inspired by. She suffered emotionally and physically, yet she was not afraid to pursue her passion and share it with the world.

New Leathers from my Recent Road Trip!

I was finally  able to get away and take some highway time last month. After a nice stay in New Orleans and visiting friends in Atlanta, I headed over to Tennessee to meet my leather supplier in person for the first time. I was able to see all of the leathers up close and I must have had a creative eye that day because I came back with some very unique and One of a Kind leathers! I do not have high quantities of these leathers, so they will not be put on the Bag Builder. The bags shown are available for immediate shipping and will then turn into pre-orders until the leather runs out. If you would like to design a specific bag with any of these, please email me at porteengear@gmail.com

Moves Into a Historical Building We have some exciting changes coming our way in 2014!

I have always loved older historic buildings and Grand Rapids has plenty of them. Home of the Furniture Making Industry of days long gone, vacant furniture factory buildings are being turned into loft apartments, condos, photography studios and creative spaces. Porteen Gear is lucky enough to have found a new home in one of these buildings. Think, brick walls, wood floors and huge windows. The journey into this space will be documented on our Instagram feed. Which brings me to the next subject……

FollowUs Help us build up our Instagram feed! We will be giving away a $50.00 Porteen Gear Gift Card daily for the next three days. All you have to do is Follow Porteen Gear on Instagram. Click on this link for the web version: http://instagram.com/porteengear. If you are mobile, search porteengear under users and you will find us.

Following our Instagram feed will let you see daily happenings in the studio where you might even get to see your own product being made. We will be announcing the Spring Line of camera bags next week with all new fabrics plus we have exciting giveaways planned for the month of March with themed photography contests to celebrate the new line. You can be in the loop first just by following the Instagram feed.

We will announce the daily winners at 4PM EST. This contest starts now and ends at 4PM Sunday EST (-5 GMT).

To celebrate Mardi Gras this March, we will be launching the photography contest around the mystery behind masks. There will be some great prizes, all to be announced soon, but we can tell you that First Place will include a Retina Display Ipad Mini with a World Travel Adapter Kit. I have finally had time to get out there and do some photography. I miss the free time I used to have to just take in the scenery and “see”.

2014 is going to be a great year for Porteen Gear. We are launching a new website with a “Bag Builder”. This will make the design process easier for all of you.

This year will be about travel! Porteen gear will be one of the US retailers for Happy Cow in Australia. All of their products are made with recycled leather. I have owned a few of their products over the years and feel confident that they will be a good fit for my customers.happycow
I will be offering their backpacks and am working on the design for the “camera cube” to go into these for travel. The camera cubes will also have removable shoulder straps so they can also be a camera bag on their own. They  fit into luggage and carry-ons to protect your gear while in transit. I tried out my proto-type in Ireland this year and it was very handy to have. Stay tuned for more details on this product!

Other items to be on the watch for include, passport cases, waxed canvas toiletry bags, lens bags and a bigger convertible camera bag.

The Bag Builder

There will be a new way to order custom bags from Porteen Gear! We are excited to announce the “Bag Builder”! It will be a fully interactive experience, you will get to click on swatches and leather samples to see your design online before you make your purchase. This should be rolled out by the end of March and I will be giving updates as we go. The Creme Colored canvas bags are now finished and ready to be photographed as the base bags for the new website. It was really interesting to see all of the Porteen Gear camera bags done in Ivory canvas!

I will be putting more of these tote bags up in the Etsy store tomorrow morning. After a white knuckle drive in the snow, coming home from a family dinner, I did not have the time to get them all listed today.

Details:

This tote bag is great for overnight packing, going to the market, or carrying small packages to the post office. I use mine on a daily basis for several things.

It would make a great travel bag, it can pack flat or rolled up and would be a great carry on for those items purchased during your trip.

This tote features a water repellent interior, upholstery fabric and waxed canvas.
The two leather carry straps are designed for over shoulder carry even with a big coat on.
Inside pocket to keep small things separate.

Dimensions (flat): 21 inches wide by 18 inches tall. This tote is a soft bag and the size varies by how you have it packed.
